NOTES AND NUMBERS
IT'S A LONG WAY TO THE TOP IF YOU [WANT TO BE IN 1st IN THE SOUTH]: The Swamp Rabbits put together a 2-1-0-0 weekend, splitting with the Florida Everblades and coming from behind to beat the Savannah Ghost Pirates to close out the three-in-three. With their Sunday win, Florida idle, and South Carolina's loss to Atlanta, the Swamp Rabbits find themselves all alone in 1st in the South Division entering the fourth week of the ECHL season.
HELPING HAND: Swamp Rabbits defenseman JAKE MURRAY is no stranger to multi-point performances, especially at Savannah. In Sunday's bounceback win, Murray dished out three assists, two on the power play including the game-winner, to push the Swamp Rabbits to a 4-3 win and their 5-1-2-0 record. Murray pulled off an identical feat at Enmarket Arena last season on October 18, 2025, racking up three helpers in a 5-4 shootout win for the Swamp Rabbits first victory of the season. Even more impressive, Murray's eight assists on the season lead all ECHL defensemen and are tied for second in the whole league, and his five power play assists pace all ECHL skaters.
MR. 300: Swamp Rabbits veteran MIKE O'LEARY enjoyed both two points for the team and one for himself on Sunday afternoon, but also got to enjoy a career bench-mark. The seventh-year pro played for a 300th time as a professional in a career that has spanned North America and Europe. Of his 300 professional games, 188 were spent in the AHL, 25 in Finland's Liiga, and the remainder in the ECHL.
HARKENING THE DAYS OF OLD: The Swamp Rabbits are calling back to their days as the Road Warriors with their recent form away from the friendly confines of Bon Secours Wellness Arena. After beating the Ghost Pirates on Sunday, the team is now 2-0-2-0, one of the last eight teams in the ECHL that has yet to register a regulation loss on the road.
THEY SAID IT
"It felt great. Yes, its two points just like any other game, but it felt a little different knowing [that Florida has] had such a good history of success. The great thing about the game is that it had a little bit of everything: it had penalty kill, power play, pulled goalie/extra attacker at the end, some fireworks, they had momentum in the second, but we were up for every moment and came through with the win. Once we found out through the course of the game that Florida was up for it, our guys didn't hold anything back."
-Head Coach/GM Chad Costello following the weekend-opening win against Florida on October 30th
"The great thing about our power play is at the beginning of every year, all five guys on the unit have their own ideas: what should happen, what they're good at, and all those things. As we've moved along here, they're starting to grasp OUR ideas: the ideas the staff has for them that we think will put them into spots to succeed. That's huge, and now that they've had some success, it builds and builds and builds"
-Coach Costello regarding the power play, which enters November 6th at Savannah with seven goals in the last six games (33.3%)
"As a group, I think we should be proud of what we've accomplished so far. I think people don't realize the value of starting strong to a season and getting off on the right foot, and we've done that. We've set a standard for our group on how we wnat to play and how we go about our business. When we play as well as we know we can, we get results.
Florida is the standard in our league. We played the standard and had two really great games, won the first one and lost the second one, but we showed that we are in those games and we are at that level."
-#19 Mike O'Leary on the two-game set with Florida last weekend
"We just wanted to prove that we are a playoff team, and that's a team that's top in our league every single year. I'm extremely grateful to be able to score goals for this team, and am glad it helped us win tonight.
What proves that is that we have a 4-1 lead, we let them come back and they tied it at 4-4, and a lot of teams then shy away when they're challenged in that manner, especially by a team like that that knows how to win games. That was a special step for this group, that we held on and didn't back down."
-#91 Blake Bennett on his two-goal game against Florida on October 30th, and what the win proves about the Swamp Rabbits early this season
"When I think back, at least for me, the best thing about being a professional hockey player is the relationships I've been able to make with the people I've met along the way, so many different people from different places that I never would've even thought I'd get to interact with. It's also taken me to places I never thought I'd go.
I'm grateful to be here, and to be with these guys. I'm excited about our group and look forward to a great year."
-O'Leary reflecting on his 300th professional game, November 1st at Savannah
"It was a gutsy effort for the guys. They're tired, shorthanded, depleted, banged up, but I felt this was a massive game for us. We showed up and performed, and I'm just so proud of them. It started a little shady, but the guys stuck with it. I thought our pace was good, our energy was good, and the power play got us back into the game. Great game by [Mattias Sholl] as well, he was huge for us. Team effort, for sure.
I like our team and I like our chances. We definitely need some rest. We have a lot of guys that played a lot of minutes that need to get healthy, but I love our compete and that will only help us heading into a busy November."
-Coach Costello on the Sunday win to anchor 4 of 6 points on the weekend, earning 1st in the South Division
