(GREENVILLE, S.C.) – Hudson Schandor started a scoring sequence of three goals in 47 seconds in the third period to help vault the Greenville Swamp Rabbits to a 5-1 win over the Atlanta Gladiators on Saturday night. The win, coming on “Star Wars Night”, presented by Dipple Heating, Cooling, Plumbing, Electrical, marks three straight for the Swamp Rabbits since November 1st at Savannah.
Both teams skated to a scoreless duel in the first 20 minutes of play. A stark contrast from the night before, the Swamp Rabbits threw 16 shots at Ethan Haider in Atlanta’s net, matching their Friday night total against Savannah. Conversely, Hampton Slukynsky saw just three shots for the Swamp Rabbits.
Eventually, the Swamp Rabbits broke the deadlock after 32:29 of scoreless hockey, utilizing the power play. With 7:31 left in the second, Mike O’Leary unleashed a howitzer from the right side, blasting a Cameron Supryka pass by Haider to give the Swamp Rabbits a 1-0 lead (Supryka and Ryan O’Reilly assisted). Exactly 4:29 later, Blake Bennett was left unguarded in the slot, and after receiving a Neil Shea dish, wired home a wrister that doubled the lead to 2-0 (Shea and Jake Murray assisted).
Eventually, Colton Friesen broke through for the Gladiators on a turnover with 8:09 to play, intercepting an exit pass and finishing with a shot under Slukynsky’s blocker to make it 2-1. Not even two minutes later, Hudson Schandor started a stretch of three goals in 47 seconds: he stuffed home a power play in the net front to push the lead to 3-1 with 6:05 to play, then was followed 27 seconds later by Jack Brackett wiring Jake Percival pass from a Josh Zary turnover under the bar, concluding with Zary redirecting a Percival pass from the net front to make it 5-1 just 20 seconds after that. The Swamp Rabbits rode the late lightning to a 5-1 win, their third straight.
Hampton Slukynsky, starting back-to-back games, turned aside all but one of 23 shots faced (2-0-0-0).
The Swamp Rabbits resume on home ice with their annual “School Day Game”, presented by AFL on Tuesday, November 10th against the Orlando Solar Bears. Puck drop is slated for 10:30am, and the game will be televised on Fox Carolina.
