GREENVILLE, S.C. — Defenseman Jimmy Mazza, who was acquired in a future considerations deal from the Reading Royals on June 12, has signed a Standard Player Contract with the Greenville Swamp Rabbits for the upcoming 2020–21 season."I'm really excited to get started, as Coach [Andrew] Lord has a great coaching resume coming over from Cardiff, has a great culture-oriented style for the locker room," Mazza said. "I heard Greenville is a great city and I'm looking forward to a good year."Mazza, out of Kings Park, New York, has spent his entire pro career out of Canisius College with the Reading Royals. This past season, shortened due to injury, he posted an assist in 17 games. After three months of rehabilitation on his upper body injury, he was set to return in Reading's following game, but the season was suspended prior to his return."It's good to have Jimmy signed for this upcoming season. He is a two-way defenseman who plays the game the right way and with an edge," Lord said. "He also has a good shot and is effective at getting pucks through from the point. Jimmy is a great guy for the locker room, bringing plenty of character and energy."At Canisius, he was one of the Golden Griffins' best scoring defensemen. He ranks fourth all-time in point scoring by a blueliner with 68 points, and was named an Atlantic Hockey All-Academic selection three times. His contributions in his sophomore season helped Canisius win the Atlantic Hockey regular season championship.Mazza was the USPHL Premier Defenseman of the Year with the P.A.L. Junior Islanders in a season where he scored 49 points in 50 games.
